What took you so long?Raphael Saadiq: It came to me through Kasi Lemmons, the director. She’s a great director. I like her art style and her cinematography and what she’s about, and I felt like it was a perfect film for me to step into with a director. I love her films—Eve’s Bayou, Talk to Me—so this was perfect for me.EBONY: We’ve never heard Angela Bassett or Forest Whitaker sing on camera before. What was that like, bringing that out of them?RS: I’m a huge fan of everybody in the film, so it was cool to watch Angela walk in and go, “When I took this gig, I said I could Canada Goose Online sing, ’cause I sang in something one time, but I’m an actor so I thought I could do it. It was my first solo single, and I never actually had a script. John Singleton just told me what the scene was. And in his next movie Higher Learning, he never gave me a script. He just told me that the girl’s name was Deja and I wrote “Ask of You.” So I’ve been in maybe four or five of John Singleton’s early movies without writing songs for scenes, but I never had the script. I heard so many horror stories about scoring, but I think once you do it… It’s like once you go out and take that wave and surf that wave, you get the bug. I actually ran into RZA the other night at this GQ party, and we talked about me scoring his next film. Me and RZA are like really good friends. We’re definitely going to do something together.EBONY: Do you have some new music coming for us in 2014?RS: I’m actually working on a new album right now, which is gonna be the new soundtrack for Spike Lee’s new movie. It’s a whole album. The working name right now is Da Blood of Jesus.
